For those who read my review are probably not that surprised to hear about the major disappointment that is Disney’s soulless live-action remake of the company’s first animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In the review, I expressed my anger on this reimagining of the Walt Disney Classic, and now the backlash is more clearer than any verse the Magic Mirror would ever say.
According to Box Office Mojo, as of this writing, Snow White has made a worldwide total of $88 million out of a $240-270 million budget. For a Disney film, this is embarrassing. Even more embarrassing is the critical scores and ratings.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a critic score of 42% which defines the film as Rotten, and on IMDb, it currently has a 1.7 out of 10 ranking.
This is a sign that the public is getting sick of these heartless, soulless remakes of beloved Disney classics that are obviously for profit. With nearly empty screening rooms in most theaters, this film has officially become Disney’s Folly (which the press back in 1937 were calling the original before its release).
Plus, it seems that Gal Gadot now doesn’t want anything to do with promoting the film as Rachel Zegler has become more of an audience repellent with her comments against the original by calling it “dated” and referring to the Prince as a “stalker.” It was revealed that it got worse between the two as Zegler tried to tell Gadot to cease her support of Israel while she remains open about Palestine.
For those not in the know, Gadot is a native of Israel and fought for her country before becoming an actress while Zegler, being the nasty little narcissist she is, has been promoting Palestine and trying to get the public to snub Gadot for her obvious support for her homeland.
Also, the criticism of the songs. As stated, the new songs in the film were written by the songwriting team of Pasek and Paul, who are more well known for helping out with the music of such overrated schlock like La La Land and the pandering abomination that is The Greatest Showman, and they even had a failure called Dear Evan Hansen. The songs that they compose are mediocre earwig schlock that has the same repetitive formula that has the results of being Pop-filled and dated.
And the CGI, which has been discussed more often due to Disney’s refusal to hire actual little people as the dwarves and to make motion-capture rejects that are more fitting in a PlayStation 3 or a Xbox 360 game over a recently released film.
This film is a failure, and more than likely, Disney will not learn from this. They will probably blame the public for hating the film for fun, but I paid $9.08 to see this abomination and gave my honest review which is the equivalent of me giving the film 0 stars.
If Disney wants to go back to being what it used to be, they need to stop making these horrible remakes, stop pandering to certain audiences, and focus on quality entertainment that everyone can enjoy.
