FILM CORNER: The Film the MCU Needed

This weekend, the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released, and it was the long-awaited Deadpool & Wolverine! In this sequel to 20th Century Fox's Deadpool and Deadpool 2, Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) partners up with Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) to face against a common foe. I could say more but anything after that would be a major spoiler for the film, and I am one not to spoil heavily anticipated movies like this one.

Last time we saw Deadpool on the big screen, it was in 2018's Deadpool 2, and as for Wolverine, we haven't seen him since 2017's Logan when Hugh Jackman originally announced that would be the last time he would play the famous X-Men character. After Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, any of the Marvel properties owned by them were now for fair play in the MCU. However, one elephant in the room had to be addressed: Would they tone down the violent, 4th wall breaking, adult language spewing Merc with the Mouth?

That question was answered with the announcement of this movie, and that it would be the first R-rated movie in the mostly PG-13 rated MCU. Then, hearing the news that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine was a big shocker as people thought he hung up the claws for good. This became the most anticipated movie in the MCU after the round of stinkers that were released in the past couple of years (except for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).

How did I feel about this movie after I saw it in the local cinema yesterday afternoon? I loved every minute of it. There is so much that I could say, but like I said at the beginning of this piece, I do not want to spoil this movie! The pairing up of Deadpool and Wolverine has been a long time coming along with Deadpool's hard-R introduction into a mostly PG-13 rated film series, but it was worth the wait along with several of the surprises that Deadpool runs into.

All I can say is this was the film the MCU needed to rise back up from the mosh pit of critical and box office bombs that were released within the past couple of years, and they indeed needed it. I look forward to what they do next now that this movie drastically exceeded its expectations!
